The Black Phone Horror
The director's claustrophobic thriller remains effective despite the lack of a sequel. Set in 1970s Colorado, a series of child abductions has made the children frightened. When Finney gets captured by the villain and locked up in a basement, he dreads the worst. Yet the disconnected phone mounted nearby repeatedly calls, with eerie communicators providing assistance, as the prescient dreams of his sister Gwen may be his salvation. An effective horror. Saturday 11 October, nighttime, on Film4
The Tammy Faye Biopic
In the struggle between faith and wealth, the winner is obvious for Mammon in this director's delightfully tacky film adaptation regarding the shamed televangelist and her felon spouse. The actor portrays the venal Jim, who states at the beginning, asserting religious justification for riches. He and Tammy Faye begin monetising the American public's Christian beliefs. It's a riot of tacky decor, overdone appearance and bad faith, however the lead actress succeeds to depict the character with compassion. Next Tuesday, 1.15am, on Film4
