The former Brazilian leader has been taken into custody after authorities determined he posed a definite escape threat while under domestic detention.

The one-time leader was sentenced of planning a government overthrow in last fall and given more than 27 years in prison, but he remained under confinement pending appeals.

Top Judicial Official Justice Moraes said the decision to arrest the elderly politician was a safety action after fresh information emerged.

Bolsonaro was found guilty of orchestrating a scheme aimed at keeping him in power after he lost the presidential race to his ideological adversary, President Lula.

Supreme Court justices said that he knew of a scheme which involved plans to murder Lula and his vice-presidential running mate, Alckmin, and to detain and kill Alexandre de Moraes - the Supreme Court justice who has been overseeing his judicial proceedings.

The scheme was stopped because it didn't receive the endorsement of the military leaders. His successor was sworn in without issue on January 1st, 2023.
