One 60-day cruise through Australia has been cancelled in the wake of the death of an elderly lady who was stranded by the vessel on a remote coastal location.

The passenger had been hiking on Lizard Island with other travelers from the Coral Adventurer, but parted ways from the party for a rest. The vessel left without her and returned several hours later after the ship staff discovered the lady was unaccounted for.

A major hunt discovered her person the following day.

Authorities are looking into the event, in coordination with police and the official investigator.

Head of the cruise operator said that passengers and crew on the Coral Adventurer were told that the remainder of the journey had been cancelled due to the "tragic passing and earlier engine troubles".

In a statement, he added that guests would be given a total repayment, and said the company was working "to coordinate the return journeys of the individuals via private aircraft".

Officials also issued an updated announcement, and said they had "delivered a directive to the Commander" banning any new passengers from boarding the ship.

The spokesperson said that they would inspect the vessel in the Australian city upon its return.

Chronology of Incidents

The liner initially left the coastal city on 24 October, and was only 48 hours into the expedition at the point of the elderly woman's passing. The tropical location was the opening port on the voyage.

Guests on the vessel - who typically pay large sums of currency to participate in the voyage - were ferried there for a daily excursion with the choice of walking or snorkeling.

Family Statement

The child of the elderly passenger said that her relatives was "surprised and distressed that the vessel left Lizard Island after an scheduled tour without my parent".

In her statement, she described her mum as an "energetic octogenarian" who was a member of a walking group.

"From the little information we have been provided, it appears that there was a failure of care and basic judgment," she said.

She further stated that she hoped the examination would be able to pinpoint what "the organization should have performed that might have protected Mum's life".

"According to reports from the authorities that it was a extremely warm afternoon, and she fell ill on the hill climb," she explained.

"Officials suggested her to go back, without accompaniment. Then the boat left, apparently without conducting a headcount.

"At a certain moment in that process, or not long after, she died, without company."

Company Position

Via official communication, the CEO affirmed that the company was "cooperating fully with investigators to support their investigation".

He stated that the firm was "extremely apologetic that this has happened" and had extended its full support to the loved ones.

Shipping Sector Standards

The ship caters for up to a hundred twenty travelers with forty-six staff, according to corporate details. It was specifically designed to access isolated areas of Australia's coastline and is equipped with "small boats" - small boats used to transport individuals on land visits.

Incidents such as this are uncommon, and cruise ships have protocols to document which individuals are embarking or leaving, according to industry experts.

"Going ashore secretly or [back] onboard just isn't an option," one expert stated.

Vessel operators consider these methods very seriously and have "advanced technology in place to prevent such incidents from happening," the expert added.

"This seems to be probably a surprising - and tragic - single occurrence."
